Questions

What is a demand letter?

A formal letter asking someone to pay money they owe you by a deadline, and saying what you'll do if they don't. It's often the last step before small claims court, and many disputes end with it. If yours doesn't, the letter and its certified-mail receipt show you asked in writing.

What goes in my letter?

Plain, firm wording that we've written once, filled in with your facts: who owes you, how much, what happened in your own words, a deadline to pay and how to pay. For security deposits in the states we've checked, it cites the state's deposit statute and deadline, and the penalty the law sets for keeping a deposit in bad faith. See deposit laws by state.

Is this legal advice?

No. We're a self-help document service, not a law firm. We don't review your situation or tell you what to do, and using the site doesn't make us your lawyer. The facts and the decision to send the letter are yours. If you're unsure about your rights, talk to a lawyer or your local legal aid office; many offer free help to renters.

How does the certified mailing work?

With the mailed option, after you review and confirm the letter, our printing partner prints it and sends it by USPS First-Class Mail with Certified Mail and an electronic return receipt. You get the USPS tracking number on your letter page. After delivery, USPS tracking shows the signature.

What does it cost?

$29 for the mailed option, including printing, postage, the Certified Mail fee and the electronic return receipt. $12 for a print-ready letter you mail yourself.

Can I change the letter?

Yes, before you pay: edit your answers as often as you like. After paying for the mailed option, you review the full letter before it's sent; if something's wrong, email admin@certifieddemandletter.com and we'll fix it before it goes out. Once mailed, a letter can't be recalled.

What if they still don't pay?

That's your decision. Many people file in small claims court, which is designed for people without lawyers. Bring your letter, the certified-mail receipt, tracking showing delivery, and your other evidence.
